These are some great books you might enjoy.

I really enjoy reading all types of genres.  Some of my favorites are historical fiction and realistic fiction.

Chasing Lincoln's Killer

Picture
This is actually a non-fiction account of the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth.  It reads like a mystery and is full of intricate details of the actual events surrounding Lincoln's assassination.  I bet you will be surprised at what you find out in this book.  You will amaze your friends and parents when you share the details you learn.

An Island Far From Home

Picture
This historical fiction is based during the Civil War and features two boys; one from the North and one from the South.  As they hesitantly encounter each other, they learn that they are actually not that different from one anther.  This book will show you a side of war that you probably have not thought much about.

40 Acres and Maybe a Mule

Picture
Based in the years after the slaves have been freed, this historical fiction tells about how plantation owners in the south would not let their slaves go.  This story paints a picture of how slowly time moves when changes are forced upon people who do not want to see change.  So, even though Lincoln has said the slaves are free, it does not mean they actually are let go.  And if they escape, where will they go for food, housing, jobs and safety?

Jacob's Rescue

Picture
This is one book you will not want to miss.  The story is created around a Jewish family living in Warsaw, Poland when the Germans took over.  Of course, no one imagined when the Nazis would do, so the family was not prepared.  This is the true story of one boy, Jacob and how he was rescued from the horrors of the Holocaust.

The Cay

Picture
Another historical fiction based during World War II, the main character, Philip, is American but lives in Caracao where his father works for an oil refinery.  Philip is with his mother trying to find safety back in America when the Nazis torpedoes reach the Caribbean.  When his ship goes down, Philip find himself floating on a raft with a black man named Timothy.

Adolph Hitler

Picture
If ever there was darkness in our history, this is where you would find it.  I encourage you to read a biography on this world leader.  When you do, you will find that there was a little boy who somehow grew up to become a killer.
If you imagine a football field filled with dominoes standing on end, and every one of those dominoes has to be in the right place to hit the next one and so on; then you will see how Hitler's life was one dominoe after another and in the end, a monster was created.
Last year my class read a biography of Hitler and we took notes on the important things we thought would be dominoes.  When we finished the book, we had 13 pages of notes!
In order to be sure nothing like this ever happens again in our lives, we must know the past and how it was ever allowed to occur.
